Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) ignited fierce backlash after dismissing claims that murdered conservative activist Charlie Kirk sought civil political debate, calling such assertions “full of s–” in an interview with progressive outlet Zeteo.
The remarks, made just days after Kirk was fatally shot at Utah Valley University, drew condemnation from critics who accused Omar and other Democrats of exploiting the tragedy to attack ideological opponents. The incident has intensified scrutiny over escalating political rhetoric and violence in a polarized nation. Omar – a member of the progressive “Squad” – argued that Kirk’s legacy was marked by divisiveness rather than constructive discourse. “There are a lot of people who are talking about him just wanting to have a civil debate,” she said. “These people are full of s**t and it’s important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness.”
She accused Kirk of downplaying George Floyd’s death, opposing Juneteenth and spreading “hateful rhetoric” online. Her comments echoed broader Democratic critiques of Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization. But critics accused Omar of hypocrisy, noting her past inflammatory statements and the left’s reluctance to condemn rising threats against right-wing figures.
Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) blamed President Donald Trump for Kirk’s death, claiming Trump’s rhetoric fuels political violence.
“We’ve seen the January 6th rioters who clearly have tripped a new era of political violence,” Pritzker said, omitting mention of assassination attempts against Trump.
Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) struck a more measured tone, urging accountability “from both sides.”
Yet even local officials joined the fray. Fairview Park, Ohio City Council President Michael Kilbane wrote on Facebook: “A lot of good people died today. Charlie Kirk wasn’t one of them.”
The backlash extended beyond politicians. A Secret Service agent, Anthony Pough, was placed on leave after posting: “If you are mourning this guy .. delete me. He spewed hate and racism.”
Similarly, a Marine recruiter was fired for sharing an Instagram post celebrating Kirk’s death with the caption: “Another racist man popped.”
Public school teachers also faced repercussions. AnneMarie Donahue, a Massachusetts educator, was suspended after posting: “We’re NOT offering sympathy.”
In Florida, Lee County officials vowed to investigate a district employee who mocked Kirk’s death with gun-control sarcasm.
Even the NFL’s Carolina Panthers fired communications coordinator Charlie Rock for sharing Wu-Tang Clan’s “Protect Ya Neck” alongside footage of Kirk’s shooting, captioned: “Why are y’all sad? Your mad said it was worth it …” Brighteon.AI‘s Enoch notes that “this action underscores the NFL’s commitment to maintaining a sanitized public image, free from any perceived controversy or dissent.”
The fallout from Kirk’s death underscores America’s deepening political divisions. While Omar and others framed their remarks as condemnations of hate speech, critics argue that such rhetoric only fuels the cycle of hostility. As investigations into Kirk’s killing continue, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the consequences when political discourse turns toxic – and the urgent need for reconciliation in an increasingly fractured nation.
