Social media giant Twitter may be looking to further censor conservatives through a a further extension of its “hate speech” policy. The updated policy gives the company more power to censor tweets that it finds “offensive.”
“Today, we’re expanding our hateful conduct policy to address language that dehumanizes people on the basis of race, ethnicity, or national origin,” the official Twitter Safety account stated in a tweet on Dec. 2.
The company justified these changes by claiming that “Research shows that dehumanizing speech can lead to real-world harm,” adding that they wanted to make sure that “more people – globally – are protected.”
In its tweet, Twitter Safety included a link to a new Twitter blog post where the company described a variety of ways in which it will now censor any rhetoric its moderators find offensive. It stated that the company may “temporarily lock or suspend” the accounts of those who go against the new rules.
The company also stated that it would be working with “global third-party”experts in its “Trust and Safety Council” on ways to further expand its policy.
“The Council is composed of several advisory groups, each focused on issues that are critical to the health of the public conversation,” the page states.
But many of the groups involved in the Council and in Twitter’s Online Safety and Harassment advisory groups are infamous far-left activist organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt infamously spoke in a panel in February of 2019 where he confirmed that he had worked with tech giants such as Google, Facebook and, of course, Twitter in order to restrict what their users are allowed to say online. Greenblatt defended this by saying that his goal was to protect user’s rights to “not be harassed or hated.”
In the same panel, Greenblatt smeared online conservatives as being anti-Semitic for their criticism of liberal billionaire George Soros, claiming that the latter was “patient zero for the anti-Semites.”
Another far-left organization on Twitter’s council is the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). The organization has been known to pick fights with online outlets, even those not identified as conservative, for the supposed “misuse” of certain words. Last year, GLAAD expressed outrage with Politico after it referred to an exchange between then-Democratic presidential hopefuls Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren as a “pillow fight.”
More importantly, GLAAD has a significant track record of threatening companies, such as Hallmark and Chick-fil-A, to bend to their leftist ideology. (Related: Twitter is used to block GOP arguments, and magnify Biden celebrations.)
Twitter’s expanded “hate speech” policy comes as President Donald Trump has renewed calls for Congress to repeal Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act.
Section 230 is a liability shield that shields big tech companies such as Twitter from actions against them based on the content of third-parties, stating: “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.”
Conservative lawmakers have long contended that these tech companies have been acting as publishers and thus, should no longer be shielded by the law.
In a series of tweets, Trump stated that Section 230 was a threat to national security.
“Our Country can never be safe & secure if we allow it to stand,” said Trump, adding that he would push for its termination as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.
