It’s no big secret that the media controls people’s perceptions of reality by picking and choosing which news topics to report, and which news topics not to report. And its coverage of the recent “March for Our Lives” gun control protests is no exception, having received 13 times the amount of airtime compared to the similarly named, pro-life “March for Life” event that’s been taking place in Washington, D.C., and around the country for many decades.
According to reports, the major broadcast networks have been covering the “March for Our Lives” events ad nauseam, making it appear as though most of the country supports eliminating the Second Amendment (which couldn’t be further from the truth). Meanwhile, they’ve all but completely ignored the “March for Life” events where tens of thousands of Americans are making their voices heard about the evils of abortion.
Even the so-called “Women’s March” has gotten more media attention than “March for Life” – though “March for Our Lives” has gotten the most coverage by far. And people are really starting to notice this disparity, some of them expressing outrage on Twitter and other social media sites about the mainstream media’s blatant perpetuation of its own deceptive narrative.
“Tomorrow the American media will give massive coverage to another leftwing march in Washington while continuing the tradition of mostly ignoring the actual March for Life,” tweeted The Resurgent writer Erick Erickson on his Twitter account.
“Really looking forward to the wall-to-wall coverage of next year’s March for Life now that the mainstream media has decided to care about massive political marches populated largely by young people,” commented Alexandra DeSanctis, a Buckley Fellow at the National Review and co-host of “Ordered Liberty” with David French.
LifeNews.com was the first to point out the glaring coverage disparity, presenting concrete data that illustrates the undeniable bias that exists at most mainstream media outlets when it comes to fairly and accurately reporting the news.
What’s even sadder is the fact that, of the three marches, “March for Life” has been around the longest, and has gained the most loyal following as it has taken place year after year almost since abortion was first legalized back in 1973. And yet, compared to “March for Our Lives” and the “Women’s March,” you almost wouldn’t even know it exists, based on how little coverage it receives on the national and global media stage.
“During their Saturday news shows the evening of the March for Our Lives, ABC, CBS, and NBC spent nearly a half hour (28 minutes, 23 seconds) highlighting the event,” LifeNews.com reports. “For comparison, the same evening shows gave 2 minutes, 6 seconds to the March for Life, Jan. 19. And even newer marches, like the Women’s March, received 6 minutes, 43 seconds on Jan. 20.”
The data comes from the Media Research Center’s Culture Watchdog, which conducts comparative analyses such as this in order to reveal media bias. What it reveals is that the media today is more concerned with covering people who are trying to take away a constitutionally-enshrined right than with giving a voice to folks who rightfully call out the fact that murdering the unborn isn’t actually a “right,” and never should have been “legalized” based on this fictitious notion.
“The fact that the March for Life happens every year makes it even more notable,” DeSanctis added in a separate tweet. “Every single year for 45 years there has been a huge march protesting U.S. abortion law, despite making little headway in national policy over that time. That’s incredibly newsworthy.”
